Cash statement on Indiana's settlement with Meta to mandate social media protections for young Hoosiers

Note to Press – State Rep. Becky Cash (R-Zionsville), a member of the House Education Committee, issued the following statement in response to the Indiana Attorney General's announcement that Indiana and other states reached a settlement with Meta Platforms, Inc., to pay the state up to $419 million and implement safety reforms for children on Facebook and Instagram. Cash co-authored a new law during the 2026 legislative session that creates a framework to protect minors on social media, including parental consent for children under age 16 to open accounts and restrictions on harmful features.

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 26, 2026) – "Every Hoosier child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive in a healthy environment. For too long, these online platforms have negatively impacted the well-being, mental health and everyday lives of our youth with no accountability. I'm pleased to see this settlement provide needed protections for young users and expanded tools for parents, building on Indiana's work this year to better protect minors on social media."
